In my annual prospect rankings at The Athletic, I evaluate players based on their potential and long-term value. This leads to the inclusion of both newly drafted players and those who have already debuted in the majors. For readers interested specifically in prospects anticipated to make the most significant impact in the 2025 season, I present a dedicated list of the top 25 prospects likely to provide immense value this year. These rankings take into account not only a player’s abilities but also their expected playing time; a player slated to start on Opening Day can expect significantly more playing time compared to one who joins the lineup later.
It’s essential to note that veterans from Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) and Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) aren’t categorized as prospects. Therefore, while I predict Roki Sasaki as a strong contender for the NL Rookie of the Year, he won’t appear on this list, despite my belief that his Wins Above Replacement (WAR) could be the highest among rookies this year, granted he maintains his health.
1. Matt Shaw, 3B, Chicago Cubs
Shaw is poised to secure the starting third-base position in Chicago this season, with the organization working towards this outcome since last summer. While their attempts to acquire Alex Bregman could have altered Shaw’s ranking had they succeeded, I believe Shaw is more than capable of handling major-league pitching after demonstrating strong contact hitting up to Triple-A. Among players likely to be on the Opening Day roster, Shaw has the best chance to make a significant impact, with a target of a .350 on-base percentage and 15-18 home runs in his rookie season.
2. Kumar Rocker, RHP, Texas Rangers
Rocker is expected to be a key member of the Texas rotation at the start of the season, potentially slotting in as their No. 3 starter, depending on health conditions post-spring training. His performance is projected to be league-average or better, though concerns remain regarding the amount of pitching he’ll be allowed, especially since he only pitched 36 2/3 innings last year following Tommy John surgery.
3. Dylan Crews, OF, Washington Nationals
Crews has established himself as a leading candidate for a starting job this season. As the No. 2 overall pick in 2023, he made his major-league debut last year and has no current blockers in the lineup. Despite some initial adjustment challenges in the professional ranks, I expect Crews to hit proficiently and provide solid defensive contributions in left field from the onset.
4. Jackson Jobe, RHP, Detroit Tigers
Regarded as the top pitching prospect in baseball, Jobe’s progress may be limited by health considerations. His past experiences in high-leverage situations indicate trust from management. Jobe could miss a considerable number of bats thanks to his excellent changeup, but he may initially encounter challenges such as increased contact against his fastball and a higher walk rate as he gains further experience.
5. Jasson Domínguez, OF, New York Yankees
Domínguez is likely to secure a roster spot and possibly solidify the Yankees’ center field position. Despite his limited experience in Triple A, he excelled offensively before turning 22. While his batting may fluctuate due to his performance against left-handed pitchers, he remains a vital addition to the roster, especially after a dual call-up around the time of his Tommy John surgery.
Conclusion
These prospects represent a mix of solid players gearing up for impactful seasons in 2025, showcasing their potential to significantly influence their respective teams. Other important talents such as Rhett Lowder, Jacob Wilson, and a host of others provide further insight into the promising cohort awaiting their chance in the majors.
