AMD appears to be naming its upcoming Radeon GPUs after characters from Transformers, specifically based on the RDNA 5 graphics architecture.
Autobots Roll Out! AMD’s Next-Gen RDNA 5 “Radeon” Gaming GPUs Are Reportedly Named After Transformers
According to a report from Kepler_L2, AMD’s upcoming Radeon GPUs that utilize the RDNA 5 architecture will bear codenames inspired by the Transformers franchise. This marks a notable shift from AMD’s previous practice of naming gaming GPUs after aquatic animals, while its data center GPUs bore names related to celestial bodies. While no exciting codenames were revealed for the RDNA 4 GPUs, new internal names for RDNA 5 are surfacing.
Three codenames that have come to light are Alpha Trion, Ultra Magnus, and Orion Pax. These names may indicate which codename corresponds to specific GPUs within the lineup.
Starting with Alpha Trion, who is described on the Transformers Wiki as one of the oldest Transformers, dating back to the very first generation of Cybertronians. Given his extensive experience, Alpha Trion is likely to serve as the codename for the flagship RDNA 5 GPU. Kepler has mentioned that this name will encompass the entire Radeon gaming desktop family.
Next up is Ultra Magnus, characterized as a soldier who prefers to follow orders rather than assume leadership roles. This description suggests that Ultra Magnus may represent a mid-tier or entry-level GPU in the RDNA 5 series. Additionally, Magnus may also refer to the SoC for the upcoming Xbox, indicating a possible custom RDNA 5 design for that console.
Finally, we have Orion Pax, known as Optimus Prime, one of the most recognizable characters in the Transformers universe, serving as the Autobots’ leader. Given his prominence and leadership role, Orion Pax is likely either a high-end or top-tier chip within the RDNA 5 lineup, alongside Alpha Trion. Furthermore, reports suggest that Orion may also be the SoC for the next PlayStation console.
Overall, the information surrounding AMD’s RDNA 5 gaming GPUs reveals intriguing developments. The next-generation Radeon lineup is projected for release next year, so it will be some time before we see these cards in action, with potential insights expected at major events like CES 2026 or Computex 2026.
