Gunman Kills Four in Manhattan Skyscraper Shooting
Welcome to the US Politics live blog. I’m Tom Ambrose, bringing you the latest updates over the next few hours.
Tragically, a gunman has killed four individuals at a Manhattan skyscraper, which houses the NFL headquarters and several major financial firms, before taking his own life, according to New York officials.
Among the deceased is Didarul Islam, an NYPD officer, an immigrant from Bangladesh, and a father of two whose wife is expecting. He was working off-duty as a security guard when the incident occurred, with New York Mayor Eric Adams describing him as a “true blue hero.”
Details regarding the other victims, comprising two men and a woman, remain scarce. A third man suffered severe injuries and is currently “fighting for his life” in a local hospital.
Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed that “the lone shooter has been neutralized.” New York police reiterated that the assailant acted solo and is deceased.
The shooter has been identified as Shane Tamura, a 27-year-old Las Vegas resident with prior mental health issues who recently traveled cross-country to New York. The shooting spree commenced in the lobby of the Park Avenue tower during evening rush hour, with surveillance footage showing Tamura exiting a double-parked black BMW.
