DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Early Tuesday in Dubai, explosions were heard as UAE’s military took measures to intercept Iranian missiles, leading to a temporary shutdown of the country’s airspace. This action coincided with Israel’s new military strikes in the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East.
The Israeli military reported they had initiated a “large-scale wave of strikes” in Tehran along with intensified assaults on Hezbollah positions in Lebanon. These actions were announced following the detection of dual salvos from Iran heading towards Israeli territory.
Concerns about a potential energy crisis were mounting, even as a limited number of vessels traversed the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial passage for global oil transport. Iranian attacks on commercial vessels in the area have severely disrupted shipping routes, contributing to skyrocketing oil prices and compelling the U.S. to consider measures to alleviate the strain on consumers and the global market.
Brent crude oil prices remained above $100 per barrel. President Trump mentioned he had urged several nations to deploy warships to ensure the safety of shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, though no immediate assurances were made in response to his requests.
UAE Airspace Temporarily Closed
The UAE’s airspace was briefly restricted early Tuesday as military forces acted on missile and drone threats from Iran. This closure was lifted shortly after, with officials affirming that the situation had stabilized. Alert notifications were sent to residents in Dubai as military efforts to counter incoming fire were underway.
In Fujairah, a drone attack ignited a fire in an oil tank facility, although no injuries were reported. This abrupt airspace closure highlights the delicate balance UAE authorities must maintain to ensure the operations of their airlines, Emirates and Etihad, amidst ongoing Iranian strikes.
Israel’s Military Actions Intensify
In the early hours of Tuesday, Israel escalated its military actions against Tehran and Hezbollah in Beirut. Following U.S.-Israeli initiatives that commenced on February 28, Hezbollah had initiated rocket fire towards northern Israel. Reports indicate that the Israeli military’s actions have resulted in the displacement of over a million Lebanese and significant casualties.
The rising tension has seen Iran fire missiles towards Israeli territories, with many projectiles intercepted, causing debris to fall in key sites in Jerusalem. As the conflict continues, over 1,300 lives have been lost in Iran since the surge in hostilities began.
