During the Japanese Grand Prix, when Oscar Piastri opted for new tires on lap 20 of the 53-lap race, both Max Verstappen and Lando Norris followed suit just a lap later. Upon entering the pits, McLaren managed to give Norris over a second advantage due to Verstappen experiencing a slightly slower pit stop.
This situation gave Norris an excellent chance to seize the lead. As he was released by his team, he positioned himself next to Verstappen as they neared the pit lane exit. Despite Verstappen being ahead on fresh tires, Norris continued to maintain his position alongside as they exited the pits. In a tense moment, Norris accelerated, almost matching Verstappen’s speed, but briefly ventured onto the grass.
Following the incident, a heated debate erupted over team radios. Norris accused Verstappen of pushing him off the track, while Verstappen countered that Norris had steered himself onto the grass. Although race stewards were informed, they soon announced no further action would be taken.
Fast Lane Priority
The absence of an investigation can be attributed to a clear rule: Verstappen was utilizing the fast lane, while Norris came from the working lane. According to the FIA’s international sporting code, vehicles in the fast lane have the right of way over those rejoining from the working lane, which must yield and integrate behind.
Evaluating Unsafe Release
The issue of whether Norris was released unsafely also arises. Generally, penalties are given for unsafe releases where a driver from the working lane merges into the fast lane, forcing an already present driver to take evasive action. In this case, however, no crew members were in danger as this took place at the end of the pit lane, and Verstappen faced no impediment from Norris.
Clarifying Regulations
The regulations specify that vehicles should not exit their garage or pit area in a way that endangers pit lane personnel or obstructs other drivers. Historical fines for unsafe releases have been given based on similar conditions. For instance, Racing Bulls faced a fine when a driver inadequately merged into the path of an oncoming Verstappen during qualifying.
Post-Race Banter
Although tensions between Norris and Verstappen were evident during the race, both drivers later joked about the incident. Norris acknowledged he had anticipated little room from Verstappen. Meanwhile, Verstappen humorously remarked in the press conference about the poorly cut grass on the right side, suggesting that Norris contributed to tidying it up. Norris added, “The team executed a stellar pit stop under pressure; I was just navigating the grass!”
Explaining the Slower Pit Stop
Regarding Red Bull’s slower pit stop that contributed to this incident, team principal Christian Horner explained the situation. Two main mechanics had to return to the UK due to a family issue, resulting in less experienced personnel being present, which contributed to the delay.
