PITTSBURGH – New Beginnings for Valdes-Scantling
Wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling expressed his excitement during media day as he settled into his new spot next to Aaron Rodgers at the Pittsburgh Steelers practice facility, emphasizing that his reunion with Rodgers was the primary factor behind his move.
Rodgers: A Key Influence
“This guy next to me got me here,” Valdes-Scantling said, referencing Rodgers. “He’s been wanting me to join him since our time in Green Bay.” During a media session, Valdes-Scantling cheekily asked Rodgers about his excitement to have him back.
Past Success Together
Valdes-Scantling played alongside Rodgers for four seasons with the Green Bay Packers, during which he caught 13 touchdown passes. With Rodgers earning MVP honors twice during their time together, Valdes-Scantling enjoyed a peak performance in 2020, recording six touchdowns and leading the league with 20.9 yards per catch.
Transitioning to Pittsburgh
After his release from the San Francisco 49ers, Valdes-Scantling weighed options between the Steelers and the 49ers. He eventually signed with Pittsburgh, citing Rodgers’ encouragement as essential in his decision-making process.
Practice Squad Journey
Despite initially being placed on the injured reserve by the 49ers due to a calf injury, Valdes-Scantling has since recovered and is eager to contribute to the Steelers. He had mixed feelings about starting on the practice squad but is determined to deliver once he regains his form.
Future Prospects
As the Steelers continue to explore options for adding talent, Valdes-Scantling is hopeful about his debut, possibly occurring against the Los Angeles Chargers. He feels confident regardless of when his elevation from the practice squad happens.
