Sunrisers Hyderabad is facing a challenging season in the IPL 2025. Following a strong run in 2024, when they nearly clinched the title, this year has been drastically different for the team. Their recent seven-wicket loss to Gujarat Titans marked their fourth defeat in a row, casting a dark shadow over the team’s prospects.
After the match, head coach Daniel Vettori appeared understandably subdued yet maintained a sense of hope. He acknowledged, “It’s disappointing. The team has high expectations and we haven’t delivered the performances we’ve aimed for.” He noted that the lack of close contests in their last four matches poses a challenge moving forward.
Vettori explained that the team’s strategy last season revolved around aggressive batting, allowing them to score over 250 runs regularly. This year began with a strong performance, including Ishan Kishan’s century against RR, but the team has struggled to maintain that aggression and adaptability in recent games.
Their setbacks have been further magnified by the exceptional bowling of Gujarat’s Mohammed Siraj, who consistently troubles their batting lineup. Vettori praised Siraj’s execution, noting that his four-wicket haul shifted the momentum significantly in the opposing team’s favor.
While four losses in five games are concerning, Vettori is determined not to lose faith. He pointed out that previous success set high expectations, and acknowledged that all aspects of their game—batting, bowling, and fielding—have not performed as required. He stressed the importance of improving their fielding before the next match against Punjab, who are performing exceptionally well in the tournament.
Vettori highlighted that their batting has not reached last year’s lofty standards; after eye-catching performances, the team has been unable to exceed 175 runs in their last three outings, intensifying the pressure on their bowling unit. He emphasized the need for adaptability in the batting lineup and responded to challenges posed by the pitch conditions and rival bowlers.
