LARAMIE — Charles Williams has decided to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal.
The redshirt freshman shared this news on his social media accounts on Saturday after Wyoming’s scrimmage at War Memorial Stadium. The 6-foot, 168-pound cornerback did not play during his first season with the Cowboys.
The NCAA’s transfer window will officially commence on Wednesday and will remain open until April 25, just a day before Wyoming’s annual spring game.
Williams becomes the fourth player to depart this month, following running back Harrison Waylee, nickel cornerback Wrook Brown, and edge rusher Sabastian Harsh, who has already committed to North Carolina State.
Additionally, defensive end Dawan Martin, a graduate transfer from Youngstown State, is also seeking a new team, though the reasons behind his departure remain unclear. Wyoming’s head coach Jay Sawvel noted he is “no longer with the team and won’t be relevant.”
Williams was a highly regarded three-star recruit from Marin Catholic High School in the Bay Area of California, where he played a pivotal role in leading the Wildcats to a state championship as a senior, recording six interceptions during the playoffs.
He transitioned to defensive back after being recognized as the Offensive Player of the Year in Class D-3A, where he accumulated over 1,600 yards of total offense and reached the end zone 31 times. Rated as the No. 8 running back in California by SBLive, Williams also received all-state recognition.
Expressing gratitude, Williams thanked the University of Wyoming and its coaching staff for his time with the program, stating he is entering the transfer portal with four years of eligibility left. He is looking forward to the next chapter of his football journey.
As the transfer portal opens up, Coach Sawvel and his staff are anticipated to be active in seeking new talent, aiming to add defensive backs, a punter, running back, wide receiver, and possibly another defensive end and offensive lineman.
