As more golf courses open in the Lakewood Ranch area, a crucial question arises: are middle-class and lower-income golfers being excluded from the golfing scene?
It seems the luxury segment of the market is prospering.
The Soleta Golf Club launched in December 2024, with the Miakka Golf Club expected to open by year-end. Soleta, designed by Hall of Famer Nick Price, has received exceptional reviews from Golf Digest.
Miakka Golf Club, a collaboration between Fry/Straka Global Golf Course Design and PGA Tour champion Paul Azinger, is being hailed for its vision to create one of America’s premier golf clubs in southwest Florida’s last untouched area.
Clearly, these venues cater primarily to affluent golfers.
Other recently established courses are exclusive to members only.
Calusa Country Club opened its golf course to the public in February but will transition to a private setup as home sales in the surrounding area conclude. Morning rounds currently cost $69. Similarly, Lakewood National Golf Club initially offered public access to its two championship courses but became private as its neighborhood neared full sales.
Golf Access Challenges
For the budget-conscious golfer, River Club remains the most economical public option in Lakewood Ranch, charging $45 for morning rounds during summer. Next is Heritage Harbour Golf Club with a $69 fee, followed by Rosedale Golf Club at $75. Rates can approach $100 as the season kicks off.
Future golf course developments in East County are unlikely to cater to those unable to afford significant monthly fees, and the prospects for a municipal course in East County remain minimal.
Affordable Options and Future Plans
Jon Whittemore, owner with extensive experience in course management, believes that despite rising maintenance costs, budget-friendly adjustments can still allow golfers to enjoy the sport.
Potential strategies include utilizing existing municipal courses in Bradenton and Palmetto, both of which are managed by his company, Fusion Golf Partners, and offer lower green fees.
Bradenton operates River Run Golf Links and maintains competitive rates, especially for local residents, with various pricing strategies to attract golfers.
Community Engagement and Challenges
While River Run faces the challenge of maintaining quality and affordability, it supports a strong community presence and caters to an impressive number of rounds annually.
Courses like Heritage Harbour also aim to maintain affordability while facing pressures from labor and maintenance costs, which remain a significant concern for public golf facilities.
Future Outlook
While quality maintenance and lower pricing can seem incompatible at championship courses, managers strive to find a balance that supports both operational costs and community access.
