Alexandra Eala’s Rise in Professional Tennis
A little less than a year ago, Alexandra Eala was an emerging teenager from the Philippines striving for a significant breakthrough in professional tennis.
Reflecting on her journey in the catacombs of Hard Rock Stadium after her notable performance at the 2025 Miami Open, the world No. 140 took a moment to understand her achievements, all while trying to remain grounded. Entering the tournament via a wild card, Eala secured victories against Grand Slam champions, including Jelena Ostapenko and Madison Keys, and due to an injury, Paula Badosa couldn’t compete against her in the fourth round.
Defeating Top Players
In the quarterfinals, Eala faced Iga Świątek, another Grand Slam champion. A few years earlier, Świątek had attended Eala’s graduation from the Rafael Nadal Academy, where Eala was happy just to take a photo with her. To everyone’s surprise, Eala won, reaching the semifinals.
Grounded Ambitions
Eala expressed disbelief, stating, “Crazy,” yet immediately shifted into a competitive mindset. Regardless of her future matches, she felt her life would remain unchanged. “When things are this new and this big, I can’t afford to think about it. At the end of the day, I am the same person,” she explained.
Becoming a National Icon
Today, Eala ranks as the world No. 29 and symbolizes hope and pressure for the Philippines, an archipelago with over 115 million people. Her influence reflects the aspirations of players from countries outside of traditional tennis strongholds, where public interest can rapidly surpass their ranking.
Impact on Filipino Tennis
Her influence has been remarkable. Although she does not yet match the status of boxing champion Manny Pacquiao, many believe it’s just a matter of time. Eala has captivated fans, many of whom have only recently started following tennis, organizing their schedules around her late-night matches due to time difference issues.
Facing Challenges in Her Career
Despite the pressure, Eala remains determined. The novice season on the tour has been physically demanding, causing consistent aches in her body. However, she relishes the support from the Filipino community at various tournaments. Eala’s remarkable victories have evoked pride, particularly during her matches at the U.S. Open and Indian Wells, where the Filipino crowd passionately cheered her on.
