As we pass the five-week mark since Opening Day, all six divisions in MLB remain competitive, with no teams decisively pulling ahead.
Heading into Saturday’s games, each second-place team is within four games of their respective division leaders, with most trailing by just three games.
This lack of resolution allows us to speculate on future outcomes. We asked 10 writers and researchers from MLB.com to participate in a draft to identify the teams they believe are most likely to become division champions by season’s end, taking into account current performances and the competitive landscape.
1. Dodgers (NL West)
Current Status: 1st place, 1.5 games ahead of San Diego
The Dodgers hold the best record in MLB, yet some may feel they haven’t met expectations so far. After an impressive 8-0 start, they’ve gone 14-10 since. Even while facing injuries within their pitching rotation, the Dodgers have historically managed to thrive, winning the NL West last season despite similar challenges. With strong offensive stats and projected returns of key pitchers, they’re positioned to win their division for the 12th time in 13 seasons.
2. Cubs (NL Central)
Current Status: 1st place, 2 games ahead of Cincinnati
The Cubs are not just performing well; they’re showcasing an exciting brand of baseball. Leading the majors in runs and stolen bases, they’ve also posted impressive home run stats. While their pitching staff has faced some challenges, they have the potential to make impactful trades to bolster their lineup as the Trade Deadline approaches.
3. Yankees (AL East)
Current Status: 1st place, 2 games ahead of Boston
Despite competition from the Red Sox, the Yankees lead in several offensive categories, including home runs and on-base percentage. Aaron Judge continues to perform at an elite level, supported by strong contributions from teammates. Their bullpen has shown promise, and while they face challenges with injuries, particularly to Gerrit Cole, they remain well-positioned.
4. Astros (AL West)
Current Status: 3rd place, 3 games behind Seattle
Though the Astros are currently in third place, their history of success and potential for positive regression gives them a fighting chance. Despite losing key players during the offseason and dealing with underperforming hitters, they remain in close contention and could regain their top form as the season progresses.
5. Mets (NL East)
Current Status: 1st place, 3.5 games ahead of Philadelphia
The Mets were the first team to hit 20 wins this season, leading in ERA across MLB. Notably, they have managed this success without some of their key acquisitions, which suggests they have even more potential to exploit as the season goes on. With a solid foundation, they’re in a strong position to fend off competition from the Phillies and Braves.
6. Tigers (AL Central)
Current Status: 1st place, 2.5 games ahead of Cleveland
Once known for their chaotic pitching tactics, the Tigers now field one of the best rotations in baseball. With standout performances from their starters and an offense that shows signs of improvement, Detroit has built a team capable of competing for the AL Central title this season.
