Ian Cunningham Named Atlanta Falcons General Manager
ATLANTA – Ian Cunningham, an experienced front office member with two Super Bowl victories, has been appointed as the general manager of the Atlanta Falcons. His selection followed discussions with team leadership, including owner Arthur M. Blank, on Thursday in Atlanta.
Cunningham’s Previous Experience
Cunningham joins the Falcons after spending four seasons (2022-25) as the assistant general manager for the Chicago Bears, culminating in an NFC North championship in 2025. He will report directly to the team’s president of football, Matt Ryan.
Vision and Leadership
“It became clear during our extensive interview process that Ian was the right fit for our general manager role,” stated Ryan. “His vision for the team aligns perfectly with what we need to elevate the Falcons. Ian has proven he has what it takes to build championship contenders, having won Super Bowls with Baltimore and Philadelphia, and we’re excited about what he and Coach Stefanski can achieve together.”
Achievements in Chicago
During his tenure with the Bears, Cunningham was instrumental in bringing four players to the team who were recognized with three All-Pro honors and four Pro Bowl selections. The 2025 Chicago offense ranked sixth in the NFL, with a majority of players on the roster acquired while Cunningham was in his position.
Cunningham’s Commitment
“Being the general manager of the Atlanta Falcons is a tremendous honor. I’m grateful to Arthur Blank, Matt Ryan, and the entire search committee for this opportunity,” Cunningham expressed. “Having witnessed the excitement of Atlanta sports as a kid, I’m eager to reignite that passion. Together with Matt and Kevin, I’m looking forward to building a competitive team for the city.”
Background and Early Career
Before his role in Chicago, Cunningham spent five seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles, contributing to their first Super Bowl victory in 2017. He held several positions, including director of college scouting, during which the Eagles made four playoff appearances and won the NFC East twice.
Cunningham’s Path to the NFL
Cunningham began his NFL career with the Baltimore Ravens in 2008 as a player personnel assistant, contributing to the team’s successful run, including a Super Bowl victory in 2012. He also had a brief playing stint with the Kansas City Chiefs as an undrafted free agent offensive lineman.
Family and Education
Cunningham holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a master’s degree in education from Virginia. He resides in Atlanta with his wife, Justine, and their three children: Elliot, Rooney, and Niall.
