Welcoming Back a Familiar Face
On Tuesday, John Hugley IV, a towering figure with a warm smile, emerged from a summer basketball training session at Duquesne’s UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse, happily addressing an observing fan.
The Return of Big John
“Can I call you ‘Big John?’” the fan asked. “Sure can,” Hugley replied, confirming that he is indeed the same John Hugley who previously played for Pitt.
A New Chapter in Pittsburgh
After three seasons at Pitt under coach Jeff Capel, Hugley returns to Pittsburgh to join Duquesne in the Atlantic 10, thanks to the recruitment efforts of head coach Dru Joyce III.
Building Expectations
Standing at 6-foot-11 and weighing 270 pounds, the Cleveland native previously earned All-ACC honorable mention during his time at Pitt and played for Oklahoma and Xavier in the Big 12 and Big East, respectively. “I love Pittsburgh. This is like a second home to me,” he shared, expressing his desire to stay in the city long-term.
Reviving Duquesne Basketball
Joyce is thrilled about Hugley’s arrival, as he looks to rejuvenate Duquesne’s basketball program after a challenging previous season. “Having John here is enormous,” Joyce stated, emphasizing Hugley’s experienced background in high-level basketball.
Personal Connections and Ambitions
Joyce and Hugley share a longstanding connection, which facilitated Hugley’s transition. “I’ve known him since high school,” Joyce remarked, noting that familiarity played a crucial role during the transfer process. Hugley aims to elevate Duquesne basketball to new heights, aspiring for NCAA Tournament appearances.
Aiming for Success
With dreams of a successful final college season, Hugley is determined to change the narrative surrounding Duquesne’s basketball program, stating, “This is a high-major program, and we are going to shock the world.” His excitement for the upcoming season is palpable, as he foresees Duquesne evolving into a formidable contender.
