The Impact of the Denver Police Brotherhood Youth Boxing Gym
Jesus Vasquez Jr. will always remember a pivotal moment that left him with a bloody nose. At just ten years old, after moving to Denver, he sought a positive outlet for his life, which was spiraling out of control. He faced suspensions at school due to fights, and many of his friends were drifting towards gangs and drugs.
When he entered the Denver Police Brotherhood Boxing Gym, he was shocked during a sparring session with more experienced peers. However, this experience marked the beginning of a transformative journey for him.
“I was a troubled kid,” said Vasquez Jr., now 34 and a professional boxer. “The Brotherhood Gym helped me find my path. I could release my frustrations here. My first sparring left me crying and bleeding, but it was a wake-up call that boxing was going to change my life.” His experience reflects the broader impact of the youth program at the gym, which has been a haven for kids for 30 years.
Located in a former church in south Denver, the non-profit gym runs on minimal fees, only requiring a USA Boxing membership. Many of the volunteer coaches are current or former Denver police officers, underscoring the gym’s commitment to the community.
The gym’s simple setup features minimal equipment yet fosters an atmosphere of hard work and dedication. As coach Zeonnia Parrish notes, “You smell hard work the moment you enter. It’s an old-school ‘Rocky’ gym where effort outshines fancy equipment.” The youth program has produced numerous champions, emphasizing that the goal is to connect boxing with personal development.
Edwards, one of the gym’s founders, emphasizes building life skills rather than only focusing on boxing. Many kids come to the gym for a second chance due to legal troubles, and once inside, their past stays behind them, replaced by the drive for success and community support.
Former boxers, like Andrew Strode, who faced personal tragedy and found solace at the gym, express the enduring value of this community space. He appreciates the support and guidance available, with plans to give back as a coach one day and ensure that the Brotherhood continues to flourish for future generations.
