Injury Update on Jericho Sims Before Game Against Thunder
MILWAUKEE — Prior to the Milwaukee Bucks’ 121-105 defeat against the Oklahoma City Thunder on Sunday evening, head coach Doc Rivers provided an update on backup center Jericho Sims, who sprained his right thumb during Saturday’s victory over the Indiana Pacers.
“It’s a fairly significant injury,” Rivers stated. “Decisions will likely need to be made.”
Surgery Consideration for Sims
When questioned about the possibility of surgery, Rivers affirmed that it might be necessary, although Sims appeared for his pregame warmup shortly after Rivers’ announcement, sporting a tape on his thumb.
Game Performance Despite Injury
With the Bucks’ coaching and training staff overseeing, Sims completed his warmup and was cleared to participate in the game against the Thunder. Despite the injury, he managed to secure four rebounds, deliver one assist, and block a shot in 12 minutes of play. On his first offensive possession, Sims leaped for an offensive rebound, received a pass from star player Giannis Antetokounmpo, and made an accurate assist for a corner three-pointer.
Uncertain Future for Sims
After the game, Sims expressed that he didn’t feel significant issues during play but was uncertain about the next steps. “To be determined,” he replied when asked if he could keep playing through the injury. “I’m not sure which direction I’m going right now.”
Surgery and Timeframe for Recovery
On Monday night, the Bucks announced that Sims had successfully undergone surgery to repair a torn ligament in his right thumb. They anticipate that he will be sidelined for roughly four weeks, with the possibility of returning for the playoffs.
Impact on Team Dynamics
While the Bucks aim to qualify for the postseason, the Play-In Tournament commences on April 15, and the NBA playoffs begin on April 19. With Sims likely out for the remainder of the regular season, the Bucks will need to adjust their big man rotation as Bobby Portis nears his return from suspension.
Potential Replacements and Strategies
The Bucks may consider rookie Tyler Smith or two-way player Pete Nance as alternatives for Sims, but their limited experience raises concerns. If neither is deemed suitable, the team might opt for small-ball lineups, particularly with Kyle Kuzma’s arrival, as Rivers has indicated he views Kuzma as an additional big man option.
