WTEF Alumni Intern at Mubadala Abu Dhabi Open for Second Year
For the second consecutive year, three alumni from the Washington Tennis and Education Foundation (WTEF) are participating as interns at the Mubadala Abu Dhabi Open, a distinguished Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) 500-level professional tennis tournament.
WTEF’s Impact in D.C.
The Washington Tennis and Education Foundation has long provided academic support and tennis instruction to students in Washington, D.C.’s Wards 7 and 8. This nonprofit organization is now offering a unique opportunity for three of its Alumni Bridge students.
An Exciting Opportunity
“This is a dream come true,” said 18-year-old Marcus Phillip before embarking on his first overseas trip. “I’m eager to experience something many of my peers would love to.”
Intern Responsibilities
The interns are assigned to various roles, including guest management, hospitality services, tournament operations, and marketing. While the work is demanding and the hours are long, the rewards extend far beyond the internship.
Global Internship Exchange Program
The Mubadala x WTEF Global Internship Exchange Program pairs WTEF alumni with university students from the UAE, allowing both parties to gain hands-on experience at the Mubadala Citi D.C. Open in July and the Abu Dhabi Open in February. Each year, the program involves three WTEF alumni and three UAE university students.
Life Lessons and Skills
Kobi Sankofa, a WTEF alumnus who interned last year, emphasized the life-changing impact of the program. “It’s not just about the work; it’s about forming connections and learning essential life skills,” he noted. Sankofa, now 19, has kept in touch with several students he met through the program.
Reflections Before Departure
As Phillip prepared for his 17-day trip, he reflected on WTEF’s influence on his life. “I struggled with my temper in my younger years, but the guidance I received helped me grow. This tennis center offers incredible opportunities, and I’m grateful to be a part of it.” Now a freshman at the University of Maryland, Phillip continues to give back by serving as an instructor for younger WTEF students.
