Suárez: The Top Trade Target
As the Trade Deadline on July 31 approaches, D-backs third baseman Eugenio Suárez is emerging as the premier hitter available, overshadowing other prospects.
Suárez’s Standing
Even though he boasts a record of six 30-homer seasons, Suárez has not been viewed as an elite hitter. However, at 34 years old, he may be closer to that status as he enters the trade market.
Who Needs Suárez Most?
To identify teams that require Suárez’s skills, we evaluated each roster’s lineup, playoff status, and urgency to win immediately.
Philadelphia Phillies’ Pressure
The Phillies sit atop the list due to their urgent need to win, having previously reached the World Series in 2022 but regressing since then. Key players like Bryce Harper and Zack Wheeler are signed beyond 2025, but age is a factor, with several players over 32. Suárez would be a significant upgrade over Alec Bohm, who has struggled this season.
Milwaukee Brewers’ Needs
While the Brewers have performed exceptionally well, holding the best record in the league since May 25, they lack power. Currently ranked 25th in home runs and 23rd in slugging, adding Suárez could enhance their chances as they pursue their first World Series title.
Seattle Mariners’ Similar Position
The Mariners, like the Brewers, are also seeking their first championship. They rank just behind the Brewers in need for Suárez as they recently added Josh Naylor but still require additional firepower. With a strong home run record led by Cal Raleigh, adding Suárez might boost their already competitive lineup.
Other Contenders
The Chicago Cubs, facing pressure with Kyle Tucker heading to free agency, need to enhance their roster at the deadline. Given their high-scoring offense, targeting Suárez would be ideal for addressing their lack of production at third base. Meanwhile, the Cincinnati Reds, without a playoff appearance since 2013, should consider going after Suárez to energize their lineup as they chase a Wild Card spot.
Detroit Tigers and Houston Astros
Despite having the largest division lead, the Tigers must act quickly after a poor streak to remain playoff contenders. Suárez could alleviate their third base woes. On the other hand, the Astros lead the AL West but face several injuries. While they may not seem as urgent in their need for Suárez as other teams, his talent could prove invaluable for maintaining their competitive edge.
