As summer wraps up, six world championships are underway this week across Korea, Great Britain, Switzerland, El Salvador, and Thailand, highlighting a busy international sports schedule.
● Archery: The 53rd World Archery Championships kick off on Friday in Gwangju (KOR), showcasing Recurve and Compound divisions. The U.S. team boasts star athletes like 2019 World Champion and upcoming Paris 2024 silver medalist Brady Ellison and women’s 2021 silver medalist Casey Kaufhold. South Korea’s archers had a stellar performance at the Paris Olympics, sweeping all five events.
● Boxing: Liverpool (GBR) will host the inaugural World Boxing Championships from September 4-14. This marks a pivotal moment for the newly established World Boxing federation, which has vowed to improve referee and judging quality following issues with its predecessor. Gender eligibility rules have also been revised, with mandatory female sex-testing introduced for the 2025 championships.
● Cycling:The UCI Mountain Bike World Championships are taking place in Valais (SUI) featuring various disciplines like Cross Country and Downhill, with main events scheduled from September 6-14.
● Rugby:The Women’s World Cup continues through September 27, with group stages concluding soon. The U.S. team faces Samoa in Pool A on September 6, alongside strong competition from England and Australia.
● Tennis:The U.S. Open is ongoing in New York, where last year’s champions Jannik Sinner and Aryna Sabalenka are competing in the fourth round. The women’s final is set for September 6, followed by the men’s final on September 7.
