The NBL is recognized as one of the most competitive domestic basketball leagues globally, and it ranks among Australia’s fastest-growing professional sports leagues.
As the league’s reputation has increased, so have player salaries, though attracting and retaining talent remains challenging in a competitive global sports environment.

Felix Von Hofe, a former NBL player turned commentator, discussed salary structures within the NBL compared to other leagues like the AFL, NRL, BBL, and NBA. He noted “significant progress” in salaries, highlighting the league’s potential to remain financially competitive despite emerging challenges.
Diving into NBL Salary Structures
Most sports leagues use a similar framework for player compensation, which typically includes entry-level, average, and top-tier contracts. NBL teams are required to have 11 fully contracted players, with the salary cap set at $2,025,569 AUD for the 2025-26 season. To maintain competitive balance, regulations stipulate that the total salaries of a team’s five lowest-paid players cannot exceed 40% of the salary cap.
Rookie contracts start around $80,000 AUD, while development players earn approximately $22,500 AUD. Von Hofe shared his experience of entering the NBL on a development contract, illustrating how the landscape has evolved, as he initially earned no salary while other rookies received around $30,000 AUD.
Top-tier salaries are becoming increasingly significant, with four players expected to earn over $1 million AUD during the NBL26 season. The league’s marquee system, allowing teams to compensate elite players beyond the salary cap limits, further elevates its competitive edge.
NBL vs. Other Australian Sports
While the NBL is gaining traction, the AFL and NRL maintain larger audiences and broader commercial reach due to their longstanding market presence. The AFL operates with a salary cap around $17.7 million AUD covering up to 44 players, while the NRL’s cap sits at $11.95 million AUD for 36 players.
Minimum contracts in the AFL are approximately $100,000 AUD, with elite players earning considerably more. Despite growing salaries in the NBL, its middle-tier players often find themselves earning less compared to their AFL and NRL counterparts, which can lead to talent leaves towards leagues that offer better financial prospects.
The Global Perspective and Future Outlook
The NBL faces competition from Japan’s B1 League, which offers attractive salary packages to Australian players. However, its strong pathway to the NBA and player development opportunities remain appealing compared to options in non-English speaking countries.
As the NBL continues expanding, the prospect of increased salaries might entice fringe NBA players to return home, providing them competitive remuneration while ensuring they enjoy the benefits of a familiar environment. Ultimately, the NBL represents a viable career path for many young athletes, offering them a route to both financial stability and professional success.
