Red Bull’s Transition to In-House Power Units
Following a successful partnership with Honda that secured four drivers’ championships and two constructors’ titles, Red Bull Racing is set to utilize its own power unit starting in 2026, collaborating with Ford.
Optimizing Preparations for 2026
Mark Rushbrook, director of Ford Performance, admits that the project has significant challenges ahead, likening them to “climbing Mount Everest,” as mentioned by Toto Wolff in Zandvoort. However, he believes that the preparations in Milton Keynes are on track.
Anticipation for Testing
“We are focused on our planning, but the real test comes when the car is on the track,” Rushbrook shared with Autosport. He emphasized that the upcoming winter testing in Barcelona is crucial for assessing the culmination of efforts over the past three years.
Nerves Ahead of Testing
According to Rushbrook, there’s always a mix of excitement and anxiety when introducing a new car or engine. Despite advanced simulation tools, he notes that real-world performance can often reveal unexpected results once on the track.
Prioritizing Performance and Drivability
Rushbrook explained that the development of the 2026 engine involves a phased approach: enhancing power, then ensuring reliability, followed by further power enhancements. He stressed that drivability—how the driver interacts with the power unit—is also a vital focus, alongside performance and reliability.
Setting Target Benchmarks
Rushbrook confirmed that Red Bull has met its internal targets but mentioned the uncertainty regarding the benchmarks set by other manufacturers like Ferrari and Mercedes. He emphasized that estimating theoretical limits based on regulations is key to setting ambitious goals.
Ensuring Competitive Balance in F1
The FIA has introduced a new safety mechanism, the Additional Development and Upgrade Opportunities (ADUO), aimed at maintaining competitive balance by allowing certain upgrades for manufacturers that lag behind in performance. Rushbrook viewed this as beneficial for the sport, ensuring everyone has a competitive chance.
