Caleb Williams’ “Iceman” Trademark Under Scrutiny
Caleb Williams, the quarterback for the Chicago Bears, is facing challenges in his attempt to trademark the nickname “Iceman,” a moniker previously held by NBA legend George Gervin.
George Gervin Responds
George Gervin, a Hall of Fame player and four-time NBA scoring champion, expressed his surprise upon discovering Williams’ trademark efforts. He noted that he has been known as “the Iceman” for over 40 years and found it unexpected that someone would attempt to claim the name.
Trademark Application Details
On March 16, Caleb Williams Holding Inc. submitted four trademark applications to the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for “Iceman.” The proposed goods under the trademark include athletic gear, clothing, and digital products.
Gervin’s Trademark Filing
In response, on March 20, Gervin Interests LLC filed for trademarks on “Iceman” and “Iceman 44,” referencing Gervin’s jersey number. The San Antonio Spurs had previously retired this jersey number.
Legal Considerations
Trademark attorney Josh Gerben highlighted that despite Gervin’s earlier use of the nickname, Williams’ earlier filing may give him an advantage in the trademark process. If Williams’ application is approved, Gervin would have 30 days to formally oppose it.
Future Steps
Gervin’s representatives have indicated plans to contest Williams’ trademark if it is approved. They are also considering legal action. Both sides can negotiate an agreement before any decision is made on the trademarks.
Similar Trademark Issues
A potential complication arises from UFC fighter Chuck Liddell’s trademark application for “Chuck ‘The Iceman’ Liddell,” which could lead the USPTO to reject trademarks from both Williams and Gervin. Gervin remains hopeful for a resolution, indicating a willingness to discuss the issue with Williams.
