Greta Kampschroeder’s Basketball Revival
Greta Kampschroeder has reignited her passion for basketball, and now the former star from Naperville North is ready to face new challenges.
Kampschroeder, a 6-foot-1 senior guard, delivered the most impressive season of her college career, guiding Michigan to its third straight NCAA Tournament appearance. More significantly, it marked her most fulfilling year yet.
“Entering college sports, it’s inevitable that you will encounter ups and downs along the way,” Kampschroeder shared. “My freshman year at Oregon State was tough—I didn’t feel I belonged—and transitioning to a new environment through the transfer portal was daunting. However, I was fortunate to find my place at Michigan, which has offered me a positive experience throughout.”
A three-time Naperville Sun Girls Basketball Player of the Year, Kampschroeder started 25 games during her freshman year at Oregon State before transferring to Michigan, becoming the first McDonald’s All-American to join the team.
Despite facing challenges, including injuries and competition for playing time, Kampschroeder’s former coach, Erin Colletti, was optimistic about her future. “Last summer, I spoke with Greta, and she was entering her senior year with a positive mindset, taking the pressure off herself,” Colletti reflected.
Kampschroeder’s approach evolved this season as she adopted a more liberated playing style. She started every game, averaging a career-high 6.8 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 1.5 assists, impressively taking on a facilitating center role in a five-guard offense.
Kampschroeder excelled in the NCAA Tournament, scoring 13 points in the opening round against Iowa State. Despite a scoreless performance in the subsequent loss to Notre Dame, she felt no regrets. “Going through the lows has taught me valuable lessons,” she stated. “Every decision has shaped who I am today.” As she prepares to graduate in May with a degree in sport management, Kampschroeder aims to pursue a professional career overseas, embracing the unknown with confidence.
Colletti expressed excitement about Kampschroeder’s future, emphasizing her growth and maturity. “If she decides to go overseas, I believe she will have a remarkable career,” Colletti remarked. With ambitions for a pro career, Kampschroeder sees this step as a growth opportunity: “Stepping outside my comfort zone is essential, and I’m ready to seize this fulfilling chance.”
