LONDON – This Saturday, executive Dave Shaw addressed the media during the UFC Fight Night 255, which marked the promotion’s return to London at The O2.
As the senior vice president of international operations, Shaw discussed plans for more frequent events in Europe, Sean Brady’s victory over Leon Edwards, Molly McCann’s retirement, and various other topics.
On the London Crowd
The return to London was fantastic overall. After a successful event in Manchester last year, it feels great to be back. The March schedule aligns perfectly with our plans, and we had many European broadcasters present to enjoy the fights, which were quite thrilling.
On Brady’s Performance
Brady delivered an outstanding performance that took many by surprise, including the audience. His dominant display was quite remarkable and certainly left an impression.
On Planning U.K. Events
Our event scheduling isn’t solely based on fighter availability. These plans are made 6 to 9 months in advance, with a goal to host events in the UK twice a year whenever feasible. This can be influenced by other events planned across Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa. We’re aiming to return in 2025.
On Molly McCann’s Retirement
In her retirement speech, McCann expressed interest in having an ongoing role within the company. Many athletes contribute positively to their communities after their fighting careers, such as Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira in Brazil. There’s a vital role for retired fighters looking to give back, and we should support these new endeavors for meaningful involvement beyond their fighting days.
On Potential Events in France and Other Markets
We’re capable of hosting events in prime time; however, organizing pay-per-views in Europe comes with unique challenges. We’ve been exploring various countries like Bahrain and Qatar for potential events while acknowledging the growing success of promotions like Oktagon. Spain remains a potential market, but the right venue is essential, as we prefer locations that offer a reliable environment for our events.
On The Future of Lightweight Competitors
Ilia Topuria is gaining attention for his evolving persona and branding. Although it’s unclear who his next fight will be, there’s significant buzz around his future plans, which are sure to ignite interest within the division.
