Nani Critiques Manchester United’s Current Discipline Issues
Former Manchester United player Nani asserts that the disciplinary problems under Ruben Amorim would not have occurred during Sir Alex Ferguson‘s tenure at the club.
Recently, Amorim transferred Alejandro Garnacho to Chelsea for £40 million after Garnacho and his brother, Roberto, publicly criticized him.
Amorim recently expressed his concerns regarding a sense of entitlement among the club’s younger players after social media posts surfaced, featuring Kobbie Mainoo‘s half-brother Jordan Mainoo-Hames, along with Chido Obi and Harry Amass, criticizing him.
Nani believes Ferguson, who was staunchly against social media, would never tolerate such defiance. “No way, not a chance,” he remarked, reflecting on Ferguson’s approach to discipline.
“If someone needed it, he would set a player aside for a game, and typically, they’d learn quickly. Disrespectful behavior resulted in punishment. At that time, adhering to rules was crucial—no player was bigger than the club.”
Nani recounted his own experience early in his career when he was benched despite a strong performance. He recognized that there were behind-the-scenes issues to resolve before being reinstated in the lineup. He feels today’s players need similar discipline and guidance.
Despite the challenges Amorim has faced in his first 13 months as manager, Nani remains optimistic, stating that Amorim has the drive and potential for success. He praised recent signings, particularly Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, who have shown promise on the field. “These players are making a difference,” Nani noted, emphasizing the coach’s efforts to build a strong team for the future.
