Manchester United Focuses on Player Departures as Much as New Signings
For Manchester United, the priority during the summer transfer window was not only enhancing Ruben Amorim’s squad but also clearing out players.
Following the signings of Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and Benjamin Sesko, attention turned to offloading Amorim’s so-called ‘bomb squad,’ including names like Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, Jadon Sancho, Antony, and Tyrell Malacia.
While United benefited financially by selling four out of five of these players, with only Malacia remaining, they suffered a significant loss on Antony, who was purchased for £86 million but was transferred to Real Betis for just £21.5 million.
Rashford was the first to depart, having fallen out of favor with Amorim shortly after the manager’s arrival. His loan move to Barcelona, covering his hefty wage of £325,000 per week, included an option for a permanent transfer at £30 million.
Garnacho, who publicly criticized Amorim, was also sidelined and eventually transferred to Chelsea for £40 million. His departure marked a significant financial success for United, as he was previously acquired for a nominal fee.
Antony’s move was a harsh financial hit, while Sancho’s loan to Aston Villa saw the club recoup 80% of his wages. With Malacia being the only remaining member of the bomb squad, United can still negotiate his exit before the transfer window closes.
Overall, United achieved key objectives, including offloading players and recovering wages, thus staying compliant with Profit and Sustainability regulations, paving the way for ongoing evolution of the squad as they aim for future success.
