Vihaan Malhotra: Future Star of Indian Cricket
NEW DELHI: Nine-year-old Vihaan Malhotra expressed a dream to his coach Kamal Sandhu, saying, “I want to become like Virat Kohli and play with him.” Now 19, Vihaan has made significant strides, showcasing his talent in the ongoing Under-19 World Cup in Zimbabwe, and is set to join Royal Challengers Bengaluru in IPL 2026 after being auctioned for ₹30 lakh.
Reflecting on Vihaan’s early aspirations, Sandhu noted his happiness at Vihaan’s realization of his dream. The coach mentioned that Vihaan admired Kohli’s style and fitness and always aimed to emulate the cricketing legend in every aspect.
Vihaan has been pivotal in India’s Under-19 campaign, becoming the only centurion in the team during the ICC Under-19 World Cup. His impressive performance, including an unbeaten 100 against Zimbabwe, helped India secure a dominant victory by setting a massive target and dismissing their opponents for just 148 runs.
Transforming his approach, Vihaan has adapted to being an all-rounder. Initially an opener, he can now bat in any position, bowl effectively, and excel in fielding. In addition to his century, he also made remarkable contributions against Bangladesh, taking four wickets and executing two spectacular catches.
Coach Sandhu emphasized the importance of versatility in cricket. He encouraged Vihaan to become an all-dimensional player, and the young cricketer has responded by improving his bowling alongside his batting. His rigorous practice routine includes extensive bowling sessions and fielding drills, accompanied by studying videos of Virat Kohli.
Vihaan was also trained by Ravneet Ricky, a member of India’s Under-19 World Cup-winning team in 2000. Ricky lauded Vihaan’s adaptability and determination, noting that he gracefully accepted changes in his playing position while still delivering consistent performances.
Coming from a family of professionals—his father an engineer and mother a doctor—Vihaan was initially encouraged to pursue a traditional career. However, he was determined from an early age to make cricket his life. His dedication is evident, as he often spends long hours training, demonstrating his commitment and drive to excel in the sport.
