MIAMI – The World Baseball Classic, having achieved record attendance and viewership, is set to return in 2029 or 2030. In the future, there is a possibility of hosting the tournament midseason, reducing the chances of teams restricting player participation.
Since its debut in 2006, the WBC has traditionally been held during spring training. The tournament regulations include pitch count limitations, and teams have the authority to impose stricter rules or disallow player participation.
“We have commitments to Fox for the All-Star Game through 2028,” said baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred in an interview with The Associated Press. “As the game evolves, we’ve discussed midseason tournaments. If we seriously consider this, a midseason event would be an excellent chance to explore.”
Rising Fan Engagement
This year’s WBC attracted 1,619,839 fans across 47 games, representing a 24% increase from the previous record of 1,306,414 in 2023. The inaugural tournament in 2006 saw 740,451 attendees over 39 games.
The most-watched game in 2006 was Mexico’s second-round victory over the U.S. with 2.46 million viewers on ESPN. This year’s most-viewed matchup was the American semifinals against the Dominican Republic, which drew 7.37 million viewers on FS1 and Fox Deportes, surpassing last year’s final viewership of 5.2 million.
Global Impact and Future Prospects
A defining moment of the 2023 WBC was Shohei Ohtani striking out his then-teammate Mike Trout. Manfred remarked that the tournament serves as a launching pad for international efforts, solidifying long-term relationships with sponsors and broadcasters.
Countries with strong baseball traditions, such as Japan, the Dominican Republic, and Venezuela, have consistently engaged with the tournament. Japan leads with three championships, while both the DR and Venezuela have secured titles as well.
As MLB discusses the participation of major leaguers in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, the timing of the next WBC may be influenced by this event. Manfred indicated that the decision on whether to host the tournament in 2029 or 2030 will consider ongoing international engagements.
