Mookie Betts Returns from Stomach Illness
ANAHEIM — Mookie Betts made his comeback on Tuesday during the Dodgers’ spring finale at Angel Stadium after dealing with a stomach illness that sidelined him since March 9.
In the game, Betts played five innings at shortstop but went 0-for-3 at the plate. Despite this, he is expected to be ready for the Dodgers’ home opener on Thursday. Manager Dave Roberts expressed confidence in Betts’ recovery, indicating he has been regaining weight and strength.
Following concerns about Betts dropping to 157 pounds from his usual 175, Roberts noted that Betts had begun to regain weight and his strength levels were normal. “We’ve managed the dehydration, and he’s been able to keep food down in recent days. All signs indicate that he has turned a corner, and we feel optimistic about his status,” Roberts said.
Betts, for his part, mentioned that he actually feels stronger than before the illness, although he is uncertain how long it will take to return to his regular weight. He stated, “My body’s been perfectly fine. It’s only been my stomach. I’ve been working out normally; the only issue was holding down food.”
While he is still categorized as day-to-day, Betts expressed optimism that the worst is behind him, stating, “I played in the game. Once I stepped on the dirt, I felt ready to go.” His return is timely as the Dodgers prepare for their upcoming home opener.
With Betts back in the lineup, the Dodgers are hopeful to leverage his talents as they head into the crucial part of the season. His recovery journey highlights the importance of physical health and readiness as key elements for player performance.
As the Dodgers gear up for competitive play, Betts’ presence on the field is significant not only for his skills but also for the morale of the team. Fans and teammates alike look forward to seeing him back at his best as the season progresses.
