Legal Action by Morocco Football Authorities
Officials from Moroccan football have announced plans to pursue legal measures to prompt both the global and African football governing bodies to address the contentious conclusion of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final.
Controversial Moments during the Final
During the match held in Rabat, Senegalese fans attempted to invade the pitch while Senegal players left in protest when Morocco was awarded a penalty during the 98th minute. Following a considerable delay, players and coaching staff returned to the field, but the penalty kick taken by Morocco was saved by Senegal’s goalkeeper. Senegal ultimately clinched victory with a 1-0 scoreline after extra time.
FRMF’s Official Response
In a statement issued on Monday, the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) expressed its intention to “pursue legal action with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and FIFA regarding the Senegalese team’s departure from the field during the final against Morocco, as well as the circumstances surrounding this event, especially following a penalty deemed correct by experts.”
Gratitude and Acknowledgment
The FRMF also extended its gratitude to the Moroccan public for their unwavering support and to everyone involved in the successful execution of the tournament.
CAF’s Position on the Incident
CAF announced it is reviewing all footage and will refer the case to the relevant authorities for appropriate action against anyone culpable in the adverse events.
FIFA’s Stance on the Violence
FIFA President Gianni Infantino condemned the “unacceptable scenes” that unfolded during the event, characterizing the behavior of certain fans and players as intolerable. He emphasized the necessity of respecting the decisions made by match officials.
A Dramatic Finale
The match was marked by dramatic turns, especially in stoppage time, when Morocco was awarded a controversial penalty after Brahim Diaz was fouled. Senegal’s coach, Pape Thiaw, reacted furiously, leading most of his players off the pitch. The players returned after 14 minutes, but Diaz’s penalty was saved, and Pape Gueye eventually secured victory for Senegal with a goal in extra time, bringing them their second AFCON title.
