NASCAR Cup Series Tests New 750 HP Package in North Wilkesboro
NORTH WILKESBORO, N.C. — A select group of NASCAR Cup Series drivers had the opportunity to test the upcoming 750 horsepower package set to debut in 2026.
Fans gathered on Tuesday at North Wilkesboro Speedway for the test session, where participants prepared for the series’ 450-lap race scheduled to take place during the day-to-night transition in July.
Driver Insights on Track Conditions
Chase Elliott from Hendrick Motorsports noted that the track experienced noticeable tire degradation after about 40 laps but still provided “a lot of grip.” He stated, “I don’t see the power hurting the entertainment factor of the race. Hopefully, it allows us to have to pedal the cars at some point throughout a run.” Elliott anticipates that the summer heat combined with increased car counts will lead to more tire wear during the race.
Track Evolution Throughout the Test
Chris Buescher from RFK Racing offered detailed observations on how the track evolved over the day. He remarked, “Wilkesboro is a very racey track,” and shared that the racing lines changed significantly. Echoing Elliott’s sentiments, Buescher emphasized that the higher horsepower becomes more apparent towards the end of the runs as cars struggle more due to tire wear.
Cautious Optimism Among Drivers
Erik Jones, who has a background in late model racing, expressed cautious optimism about the increase in horsepower, hoping it would lead to improved tire falloff. He mentioned, “We saw some falloff already today, and it’s going to be forty degrees hotter probably when we get back here,” indicating that conditions could significantly change during the actual race.
Teams Looking Ahead
Ricky Stenhouse Jr. from Hyak Motorsports sees the horsepower increase as an opportunity for his team to close the gap with powerhouse organizations. He remarked, “Throwing in new horsepower and a different package may help us figure it out, or at least get us closer to everybody else.”
The Importance of Testing
Ross Chastain from Trackhouse Racing highlighted the value of the test day itself, stating, “This is big. This is valuable.” He noted that consistent practice helps drivers refine their skills and improve overall performance. Other notable participants included Josh Berry from Wood Brothers Racing, Joey Logano from Team Penske, Zane Smith from Front Row Motorsports, and Kyle Busch from Richard Childress Racing.
