Introduction of Save Fort Wayne Group
FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) – A new organization named Save Fort Wayne has joined the discussion surrounding a proposed casino in Fort Wayne and Allen County.
Current Legislative Proposals
In Indiana, two bills are currently being reviewed regarding the establishment of a new casino. Senate Bill 70 proposes to relocate the Rising Star Casino from Ohio County to Allen County, while House Bill 1038 aims to introduce an additional casino license without moving an existing one.
Group’s Stance and Objectives
According to the organizers of Save Fort Wayne, who prefer to remain unnamed due to their professional ties, the group consists of local finance and business experts. They emphasize their aim is to keep the public discourse focused on factual discussions rather than personal conflicts. Their primary objective is to promote a voter referendum on the casino proposal, citing that increasing public awareness of gambling’s downsides leads to growing opposition.
Support from Officials
Fort Wayne Mayor Sharon Tucker and the entire Allen County Board of Commissioners have expressed strong support for the casino’s establishment in their letter to state lawmakers. They believe that the casino’s location represents a collaborative effort between the city and the county.
Potential Economic Impact
In their letter, officials stated that 60% of the new casino’s tax revenue would benefit communities in Allen County based on their population, while 40% would go towards a fund for nonprofits aimed at improving mental health, tackling homelessness, and combating addiction. They mentioned that a board would be formed to manage fund distribution, which would represent a new revenue stream for community needs.
Public Response and Additional Resources
When questioned about the Save Fort Wayne group’s claims, Mayor Tucker highlighted her desire for public feedback but also expressed concerns about potential delays introduced by a referendum. Greater Fort Wayne Inc., the local chamber of commerce, has launched its own website titled “Fort Wayne First.” The site outlines the potential benefits of a casino, including job creation and tax revenue for community improvements.
Arguments Against the Casino
Save Fort Wayne has released an “Economic Impact Analysis” which they describe as an independent counter-analysis for residents. The group contends that the proposed casino would lead to net losses for the city, heightening risks of addiction and crime.
