Local MMA Promotion AFP Gaining Momentum, Competing for Ohio’s Top Honor — and Spotlighting Hometown Talent
In just over a year, a concept has transformed into one of the most prominent names in Ohio mixed martial arts, fueled by passion, determination, and local pride.
American Fight Promotions (AFP), founded by David Yaney, is now a contender for Ohio MMA Promotion of the Year — an impressive feat for a company that held its inaugural event less than a year ago. With sold-out venues, top-tier fighters, state-of-the-art production, and a dedicated fan following, AFP’s swift rise is drawing attention both in Ohio and beyond.
“AFP raised the bar — we didn’t cut any corners,” Yaney stated in a phone interview, emphasizing the quality of their events.
The promotion’s first show occurred on February 22, 2025, in Columbus, showcasing 14 professionally matched bouts, including fighters with UFC backgrounds. Since then, AFP has experienced exponential growth, hosting four events in its first year and planning to increase that number to six in 2026, with locations including Columbus, Cleveland, Toledo, Newark, and potentially the Mansfield-Ashland area, contingent on venue availability.
Yaney, who has almost a decade of experience in sponsoring elite fighters and managing various ventures in the fight industry, launched AFP to bring a fresh approach to MMA promotions.
AFP events feature talent from organizations like UFC, Bellator, and Championship One, spotlighting both prominent fighters from across the U.S. and exceptional local athletes from north-central Ohio. The Mansfield-Ashland region has significantly contributed to AFP’s narrative, producing various well-known fighters.
As voting for Ohio MMA Promotion of the Year is currently open until January 5, Yaney encourages fans, fighters, and community members to support a promotion that is putting Ohio, particularly north-central Ohio, on the MMA map. Voting instructions can be found on various platforms including Facebook and Instagram, emphasizing the importance of community recognition for AFP’s achievements.
