Olivia Miles’ Journey Back to TCU
Five years ago, Olivia Miles was a standout high school player attracting attention from numerous college programs. Mark Campbell, then an assistant coach at Oregon, was keen on recruiting her as the Ducks’ new point guard. Ultimately, Miles chose Notre Dame, while Campbell took his first head coach position at Sacramento State before moving to TCU two years later. Their paths would eventually reconnect.
Reunion in the Transfer Portal
This April, when Miles entered the transfer portal, Campbell reached out once more, leading her to TCU, thanks to the bond they had built years earlier.
Campbell’s Recruitment Philosophy
Over the past two seasons, Campbell has gained a reputation for securing notable players from the transfer portal, such as Hailey Van Lith last year and now Miles. Yet, Campbell emphasizes that the groundwork begins long before a player decides to transfer. “It highlights the significance of recruiting high school talent and nurturing robust relationships,” he states. “At least half of our transfer players have come to us due to that.”
Proving Success on the Court
Campbell admits he doesn’t use a specific pitch for portal players; instead, he focuses on relationship-building and past achievements. Last season was challenging, as the Horned Frogs had yet to make a significant mark, but that changed with their recent Elite Eight finish, demonstrating their winning potential to prospective players.
Impressive Player Development
Under Campbell’s guidance, Van Lith transformed her performance, improving her stats significantly after a tough year at LSU. Now, with her success spotlighting the program, Campbell believes it enhances their recruitment efforts. “Success attracts players and talent,” he explains, noting that Van Lith’s journey has opened the door to both high school recruits and new portal prospects.
Welcoming New Talent
Miles headlines the incoming transfers following a stellar three-year stint at Notre Dame. She averaged 14.2 points, 6 rebounds, and 6.5 assists per game, showcasing remarkable court vision and flashy passing skills—elements Campbell is eager to integrate into TCU’s play style. Alongside Miles, TCU has bolstered its roster with six other transfers, enhancing their depth and skill set.
A Bright Future Ahead
With a mix of experienced players and promising freshmen, Campbell acknowledges the unique coaching challenge ahead. He stresses the critical need for fit and adaptation within the team dynamics. Nevertheless, he is optimistic, stating, “This is unquestionably our most talented roster at TCU. While there’s a long journey to April, if we execute correctly, we could have yet another memorable season.”
