The classic August custom of engaging in theoretical discussions that won’t influence the upcoming season is officially here.
Recently, there’s been chatter about NBA expansion, particularly focusing on which players the Portland Trail Blazers might protect in an expansion draft. The Blazers find themselves in a unique situation post-rebuild with a mix of rookie-scale contracts along with veteran players in their 30s.
Expansion Draft Regulations
The most recent expansion draft occurred in 2004 when the Charlotte Bobcats joined the league. In that draft, teams could shield up to eight players, with a minimum requirement to leave one player unprotected if the roster was below eight.
The Bobcats needed to select at least 14 players, choosing only one from each NBA team.
Today’s regulations are similar, with a significant difference: prior drafts occurred before the NBA Draft and free agency, which would require the Blazers to make more challenging choices amidst a larger pool of contracted players compared to June.
The following list is prioritized based on player importance.
Starting with the standout Israeli player, he currently leads the roster in skills, excelling on both offense and defense. He’s the Blazers’ closest candidate for an All-Star appearance, despite not being quite there yet.
The Belgian player, alongside Avdija, remains indispensable. Their roles in last season’s NBA All-Defense Second Team underscore their defensive prowess, with the Belgian being the Blazers’ top three-point shooter. Camara is on track to become an elite 3-and-D wing.
Sharpe possesses immense future potential, but uncertainties cloud the discussion more than two years ago. His scoring ability is nearly elite, though his overall success hinges on his three-point shooting and defense. With restricted free agency approaching, the Blazers will monitor his performance closely.
As for Clingan, last year’s seventh pick is already a top-tier defensive big man. Despite questions about his offensive capabilities and fitness, his rookie contract is valuable to the Blazers’ plans. His future as a center remains uncertain, but he’s poised to take on a significant role.
The rookie with notable potential will be training at the Tualatin facility for the foreseeable future. Regardless of whether he develops into a star or fades away, the Blazers are committed to providing him with every opportunity to thrive.
