The state of American women’s tennis is looking promising with several athletes currently among the top ten in global rankings.
As it stands, four American players are placed in the WTA top ten: Coco Gauff [2], Jessica Pegula [4], Amanda Anisimova [7], and Madison Keys [8].
In 2025, three of these players have made it to Grand Slam finals: Madison Keys claimed victory at the Australian Open in January, Gauff triumphed at the French Open in June, and Anisimova faced defeat in the Wimbledon final against Iga Swiatek.
Although world number four Pegula has not advanced to a Grand Slam final this year, she reached the finals at the 2024 US Open, losing to Aryna Sabalenka.
These four athletes have showcased exceptional talents, representing the United States with pride on an international scale.
Rick Macci Predicts McCartney Kessler’s Rise to Top Ten by Year-End
Rick Macci, former coach of Serena Williams, expressed confidence that another American, McCartney Kessler, will break into the top ten by the end of 2025.
He stated on X, “Top ten is just around the corner for the American Kessler. She has impressive power from both sides and incorporates volleys and drop shots effectively. Mentally, she is focused and knows how to secure wins without fear.”
Kessler has shown promise in recent matches, notably achieving a win against Mirra Andreeva to reach the last sixteen in Montreal. This victory marks her second win over a top-ten player in 2025, demonstrating her capability against elite competition.
As she prepares to face Ukrainian player Marta Kostyuk, Kessler aims to improve on previous encounters. Her current world ranking is 32nd, presenting a challenge to reach the top ten, a goal touted as possible by Macci.
To attain this ranking, Kessler will likely need to secure significant tournament wins, as several high-stakes competitions remain in the season, including the US Open, which offers substantial ranking points.
As it stands, Kessler still trails in points compared to the 10th-ranked player, Elina Svitolina. Her upcoming performances will determine if she can make a significant leap in the rankings.
