Shawn Kemp: From NBA Star to Conviction
Shawn Kemp has been associated with immense talent, significant trouble, and lost potential for years. Now, he is likely to add a jail sentence to that list.
Plea Agreement and Charges
Kemp, 55, admitted guilt to second-degree assault on Tuesday for shooting at two individuals in a Tacoma, Washington mall parking lot. This plea is part of a deal in Pierce County Superior Court, where prosecutors will advocate for nine months of jail time when Kemp is sentenced in August.
Details of the Incident
Initially charged with first-degree assault with a firearm enhancement following the March 2023 incident, Kemp faced additional assault charges and a drive-by shooting charge last week. Fortunately, no injuries occurred, although the Toyota 4Runner and another vehicle were damaged.
Claims of Self-Defense
Kemp argued in court that he fired in self-defense after one of the men shot at him. The 4Runner left the scene before the police arrived, and an empty holster was later found inside the vehicle, which was abandoned days afterward.
Legal Representation and Future Plans
“Shawn is determined to move in a positive direction,” Kemp’s attorney Tim Leary shared with the Seattle Times. “He accepted the state’s offer to take responsibility, while also acknowledging the self-defense aspect of the incident.”
Life After Basketball
Kemp, who has battled drug addiction and fathered at least seven children with six women during his 15-year NBA career, was arrested for drug possession in 2006. In recent incidents, Kemp’s truck was broken into while he was at a concert, leading to the theft of valuables, including jerseys and a cellphone.
Aiming for Positive Change
As part of his plea deal, Kemp is prohibited from owning a firearm and will serve a year of community supervision, in addition to paying restitution. His attorneys indicated he intends to educate the community about the dangers of gun violence, aiming to serve as a positive role model for youth.
