Wide Receiver Robert Woods Adjusts to Steelers’ Offense
Veteran wide receiver Robert Woods, a recent addition to the Pittsburgh Steelers, exemplifies the dynamic nature of his position within the team.
Signed six weeks ago as a reinforcement for the roster, Woods addressed reporters following organized team activities last Thursday. On the same day, the Steelers were considering another veteran, Gabe Davis, to strengthen their receiving corps.
Situated near the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex, Woods spoke while Davis was in discussions with the team. Although Davis left without a contract, his visit showcased the ongoing adjustments the Steelers are undertaking at the wide receiver position, particularly following the trade of George Pickens to Dallas in early May.
“We focus on our practice sessions and adapt to whoever is present,” Woods noted. “We welcome all teammates, regardless of new arrivals. It’s simply part of the offseason and the game, with players constantly coming and going.”
At 33, Woods has seen the ins and outs of NFL team dynamics, being on his fifth roster and fourth team in the last five seasons. He joined the Steelers on a one-year, $2 million contract signed on April 29, following general manager Omar Khan’s efforts to enhance the team by acquiring No. 1 receiver DK Metcalf from Seattle earlier in March.
The quest for a reliable No. 2 receiver has continued since Diontae Johnson’s trade to Carolina in March 2024. The Steelers explored options like Brandon Aiyuk and Christian Kirk, while also managing trades involving other players like Mike Williams.
As the Steelers search for more talent, Woods remains optimistic about his adaptation to the team’s offense. “I feel good about the offense. It resembles systems I’ve used in prior years, though with different terminology,” he stated, as the team looks to improve upon previous performances.
