Spirit Battle: Timberwolves vs. Vikings
Representing the navy blue, silver, and teal, the Lake City High School Timberwolves are up against the royal blue and white of the Coeur d’Alene High School Vikings. As the countdown to Friday’s Fight for the Fish basketball games and spirit competition begins, both schools are amplifying the excitement through various school-wide events and themed spirit days.
“I enjoy how it unites the school,” commented freshman spirit leader Frian Labesto during cheer rehearsals in Lake City’s cafeteria. “School spirit isn’t always top of mind for everyone, but events like this really bring it to the forefront. That’s what makes this school special to me.”
Coeur d’Alene’s Rock and Roll Theme
The theme for Coeur d’Alene High this year is “Rock and Roll,” a concept derived from the student body itself. Senior and ASB President Lyla Bailey remarked, “We brainstormed countless ideas. ‘Rock and Roll’ emerged as the top choice after a final vote.”
The Vikings have embraced their theme with spirit days such as Band Merch Monday, Tour Bus Tuesday, and Backstage Blackout Wednesday. Today, the focus is on Fallen Fish Thursday, honoring previous Fight for the Fish themes like Western, Viking Army, and Jailbreak, culminating in Friday’s event where everyone will don Viking colors.
Community Engagement and Fundraising
Coeur d’Alene is also raising funds for the Red and Blue Foundation, a nonprofit supporting first responders, a nod to the past initiatives aimed at rallying school spirit for a cause. “I wanted to do something impactful during the week,” Lyla said, emphasizing their goal to give back.
Lake City’s theme this year is “Rocky’s Redemption,” showcasing boxing-inspired decorations throughout the school. ASB President Tessa Petersen noted, “Fight for the Fish was canceled in 2022, so this year we’re celebrating our ‘Redemption.'” The entire school is eager for the spirit competition, with custom navy and teal boxing robes being a highlight.
School Tradition and Spirit
The prized wooden Fish trophy currently resides at Lake City High, where it has been displayed for three years. The Timberwolves have claimed victory in spirit competitions numerous times since the event’s inception in 1999, though the trophy shifts back to Coeur d’Alene High whenever they best Lake City.
Tessa, following in her parents’ footsteps as engaged students, expressed pride in the school’s legacy: “My favorite part is seeing quieter students come out of their shells. While it’s a rivalry, we focus on showcasing Lake City without disparaging CHS.”
Community Unity and Principal’s Support
Junior class vice president Chloe Crowley emphasized the inclusive atmosphere of Fight for the Fish: “It brings together various demographics who don’t usually participate in school events, creating a sense of unity.” Principal Bryan Kelly praised the spirit generated, stating, “This event unites everyone, fostering community pride.”
A special tribute is planned for the evening event, enhancing the sense of togetherness. “The students invest significant effort, and it’s fantastic to see both schools fully involved,” Kelly added. The Fight for the Fish games and spirit competition will be held at Lake City High, with girls’ and boys’ games scheduled for 5:30 PM and 7 PM. Tickets cost $7.
