Marathon’s Extended Closed Alpha: Updates and Concerns
Marathon has extended its Closed Alpha for a few more days, enhancing the AI and unlocking a variety of upgrades for players to experience “late season” gameplay. They are reportedly issuing more invites for what they’re calling a “stress test,” but the validity of that claim remains to be seen.
Feedback from the Closed Alpha
There have been numerous mixed reactions from players participating in the Closed Alpha. Being a Closed Alpha, it’s understood that many issues, ranging from weapon balance to visual enhancements, can be rectified before the official launch. However, a recurring concern among players seems unlikely to be addressed promptly, as Bungie has acknowledged that.
The Challenge of Playing Solo
A primary issue is the solo gameplay experience in Marathon. Currently, there’s no dedicated solo mode. Players can either join random matchmade teams or enter a three-player match alone, with no one to fill their team slots. This creates significant challenges.
Potential Issues with Random Teams
While playing with random teammates can sometimes lead to enjoyable experiences, the nature of the game introduces high risks. Unlike a typical battle royale or hero shooter, poor communication or player negligence during matches can result in losing all accumulated gear, often through no fault of your own, creating a sense of frustration.
Solo Play Experience
Engaging in true solo play can quickly become daunting and monotonous. Players must navigate the map while avoiding both powerful AI and other teams, which makes surviving difficult. While sneaking away with loot can be satisfying, the thrill diminishes after multiple encounters.
The Need for More Game Modes
Designing a game primarily around teamwork while leaving solo players at a disadvantage raises concerns. Although playing with friends amplifies enjoyment, it appears almost mandatory in this particular case. This expectation could prove challenging for many players who may not always have friends available or willing to join.
Bungie’s Future Plans
Bungie remains focused on improving the game for team play and has indicated that solo mode adjustments won’t be considered until after launch. This leads to questions about whether solo play will ever be fully integrated or if it will only be partially addressed in future updates. As it stands, the absence of a tailored solo experience could deter potential players.
