Antony: A Disastrous Transfer for Manchester United?
Antony is likely to be remembered as one of the most disappointing transfers in Manchester United’s recent history, failing to live up to his £85 million valuation. New reports indicate that former manager Erik ten Hag was reportedly against his signing from the beginning.
Despite having previously worked with Antony at Ajax, Ten Hag is said to have opposed the move in 2022. The club, however, proceeded with the transfer, fearing that Arsenal might make a competing offer.
Ten Hag brought two players from Ajax upon his arrival—Antony and Lisandro Martinez—while also signing Tyrell Malacia from Feyenoord. He later secured Matthijs de Ligt from Ajax as well.
Antony struggled to justify his substantial fee, facing criticism for his inconsistent performances. In his first two Premier League seasons, he managed a mere five goals and three assists. The current season saw him not starting any top-flight games before Ten Hag was dismissed in October.
Under Ten Hag’s successor, Ruben Amorim, Antony’s situation did not improve; he was loaned to Real Betis in January. His successful spell in La Liga has led to questions about whether the issue lay with Antony or the environment at Manchester United.
Though it was previously suggested that Ten Hag played a crucial role in bringing Antony to the club, the latest claims reveal that he actually tried to prevent the transfer. Kees Vos, co-founder of Ten Hag’s agency, noted that Ten Hag and Vos were opposed to the move but the club prioritized signing Antony due to Arsenal’s interest.
Antony has found a resurgence in form with Real Betis, scoring nine goals and contributing with two assists. He has expressed relief at finding joy in football again after facing mental health struggles during his time at United.
