Cue Vivaldi’s “Spring” concerto: Netflix has announced that the comedy series The Four Seasons, created by Tina Fey, will premiere on May 1. The show is inspired by the 1981 film of the same name, which was written, directed, and starred Alan Alda. The streaming service also released a teaser and initial images today, which are available below.
Alan Alda makes a cameo in the eight-episode series, which he co-created alongside Fey, Lang Fisher, and Tracey Wigfield. Alda joins a cast that includes Fey, Will Forte, Colman Domingo, Marco Calvani, Steve Carell, Erika Henningsen, and Kerri Kenney-Silver as part of a group of guest stars.
The Four Seasons is described as a tribute to enduring marriages and lasting friendships. The story centers around six longtime friends who embark on a relaxing weekend getaway, only to discover that one couple in the group is on the verge of separating. The three couples — Kate (Tina Fey) and Jack (Will Forte), Nick (Steve Carell) and Anne (Kerri Kenney-Silver), and Danny (Colman Domingo) and Claude (Marco Calvani) — are thrown into turmoil by this revelation. Over the year, we follow the friends through four vacations and observe how this upheaval influences their dynamics, revealing both old grievances and new tensions.
Similar to the original film, the series is named after Vivaldi’s concertos, with two episodes focusing on each of the four vacations, each occurring in a different season. The series diverges in several ways from the film, notably in the inclusion of same-sex couples, while the original exclusively featured heterosexual relationships.
In addition to writing, Fey, Fisher, and Wigfield serve as executive producers and co-showrunners, with Fisher also taking on directorial duties. David Miner, Jeff Richmond, and Eric Gurian are also executive producers on the project.
The teaser, which accompanies the series, is likewise set to Vivaldi’s music. It features guest stars (in order of appearance) including Julia Lester (Lila), Alan Alda (Don), Ashlyn Maddox (Beth), Jacob Buckenmyer (Lumberjack), Taylor Ortega (Rachel), Simone Recasner (Sarah), Toby Edward Huss (Terry), Tommy Do (Colby), Chloe Troast (Mikayla), Jack Gore (Kayden), and Cole Tristan Murphy (Kyler).
The season was filmed in both New York and Puerto Rico, directed by Robert Pulcini & Shari Springer Berman (Episodes 101-102), Oz Rodriguez (103-104), Jeff Richmond (105), Colman Domingo (106), and Lang Fisher (107 & 108). Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group, produced the series.
