Kevin Campbell’s Son Reflects on Father’s Decline Before His Death
Kevin Campbell’s son has shared insights on the former striker’s condition before his passing at 54, noting that his father ‘didn’t look like him’ due to significant weight loss. Campbell, who previously played for Arsenal and Everton, experienced a drastic decline in health leading up to his death.
Coroner’s Findings on Campbell’s Weight Loss
During an inquest, coroner Zak Goldberg revealed that Campbell lost an astonishing 10 stone from January to May of the previous year. Initially weighing 19 stone upon his first hospital admission in January, he dropped to just nine stone by May.
Health Issues and Weight Loss Causes
This drastic weight reduction was attributed to a rare heart infection known as endocarditis, which affects the heart’s inner lining or valves. The Manchester Royal Infirmary admitted that there were missed opportunities in diagnosing this condition earlier but stated that there was nothing more they could have done to save him.
Significant Health Decline
Before his death, Campbell suffered two strokes and faced severe heart and kidney complications. His sons, Tyrese and Kyle, both footballers, expressed their sorrow over their father’s deterioration, with Kyle stating that seeing his once-fit father decline was incredibly tough.
Acceptance of His Father’s Passing
In their reflections, Tyrese acknowledged that the family had mentally prepared for Campbell’s death, feeling a sense of relief that their father was no longer in pain. He highlighted the strength the family inherited from their father and shared a heartfelt tribute to Campbell’s positive demeanor and respectful nature.
Inquest Outcomes and Hospital Investigation
The inquest revealed that an undetected heart valve infection was discovered during Campbell’s final blood test when it was deemed there was nothing more to be done. Although the coroner ruled that an earlier diagnosis would not have changed the outcome, doubts were raised about the hospital’s initial response to his condition.
Campbell’s Legacy in Football
A celebrated figure in football, Campbell was known for his exceptional performances at both Everton and Arsenal. He scored numerous goals, significantly contributing to his teams’ successes and solidifying his status as a legend in Merseyside football. Throughout his career, Campbell scored 107 goals in 394 top-flight appearances and played for various clubs, including Nottingham Forest and Cardiff City.
