Apple’s roadmap for iPhone development extends several years ahead, with the company collaborating with suppliers on multiple models simultaneously. As a result, features for upcoming iPhone models often surface as rumors months before their release. The iPhone 18 series is no exception, and we have preliminary insights into what to anticipate for the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max.
Notably, Apple is reportedly implementing a significant change to its iPhone release strategy this year, initiating a two-phase rollout beginning with the iPhone 18 series. Consequently, the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and iPhone Fold are expected to launch in September 2026, followed by the iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e in the spring of 2027.
Design Changes
Rumors indicate that the iPhone 18 Pro models will largely maintain the design of the iPhone 17 Pro, with the rear camera system remaining similar, featuring a raised platform housing three lenses in a triangular layout. Display sizes are predicted to stay the same, with the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max sporting 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch displays, respectively. The two-tone design of the rear casing may be replaced with a more seamless look, as Apple enhances the back-glass replacement process to create a more unified appearance.
Enhanced Battery Life
The iPhone 18 Pro Max is rumored to come equipped with a larger battery, purportedly between 5,100 to 5,200 mAh, ensuring leading battery performance. Additionally, the device’s body may be slightly thicker than that of the iPhone 17 Pro Max, potentially increasing its weight to around 243 grams, attributed to the larger battery.
Dynamic Island Updates
Speculation is ongoing regarding under-display Face ID for the iPhone 18 Pro models. Reports are conflicting, with some suggesting the TrueDepth camera system will move beneath the display, thereby removing the Dynamic Island cutout. Other sources claim there will be a smaller Dynamic Island design rather than its complete removal, with a possible width reduction of approximately 35% compared to the iPhone 17 Pro.
A20 Pro Chip and C2 Modem
The iPhone 18 Pro models are set to feature Apple’s A20 chip, manufactured using TSMC’s 2nm process, promising improvements in power efficiency and performance. The A20 series is expected to deliver a 15% speed increase and 30% enhanced efficiency compared to the previous A19 series. Additionally, the iPhone 18 Pro models will incorporate Apple’s next-generation C2 modem, enhancing connectivity and efficiency, while reducing reliance on Qualcomm for cellular technology.
Camera Innovations
Samsung is reportedly developing a new three-layer stacked image sensor specifically for the iPhone 18, which would improve camera responsiveness and dynamic range. Furthermore, the main rear camera is expected to feature a variable aperture system, allowing for greater control over depth of field, a significant upgrade from previous models that utilized a fixed aperture.
Other Noteworthy Features
Apple is said to be testing new color options for the iPhone 18 Pro, which may include burgundy, brown, and purple. Special attention is being given to simplifying the Camera Control button design to reduce production costs. If everything aligns, the first devices fully supporting 5G satellite internet could include the iPhone 18 Pro and its counterparts, representing a major leap in connectivity options.
