Trump Announces Ceasefire Agreement Between Thailand and Cambodia
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump stated on Friday that leaders from Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to renew a ceasefire following intense clashes. However, officials from both nations indicated that more work is needed to restore the ceasefire negotiated by the U.S. administration earlier this year.
Details of the Ceasefire
Trump announced the renewed ceasefire in a social media post after discussions with Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet. He stated, “They have agreed to CEASE all shooting effective this evening, and revert to the original Peace Accord made with me, and them, alongside the Great Prime Minister of Malaysia, Anwar Ibrahim.”
Disputed Claims
Contradicting Trump’s announcement, the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs claimed that no ceasefire had been agreed upon and mentioned ongoing clashes. Thailand’s defense ministry spokesperson noted that strikes were still reported, while Cambodia’s defense ministry indicated that Thai operations continued into Saturday, details of which remain unverifiable.
Thailand’s Position on the Conflict
Before Trump’s announcement, Prime Minister Anutin reiterated to him that Thailand’s stance was to continue fighting until Cambodian forces no longer threatened its sovereignty. He suggested that Trump should also address Cambodia’s need to cease its actions and withdraw forces.
Historical Context and Tensions
The conflict traces back to historical disputes over territory, rooted in a controversial 1907 colonial map and a 1962 International Court of Justice ruling that awarded sovereignty to Cambodia. Despite previous ceasefires brokered by Malaysia and pressure from Trump, minor cross-border skirmishes have persisted.
Current Military Actions
Recent reports indicate that Thailand has conducted airstrikes on what it identifies as military targets, and Cambodia is using BM-21 rocket launchers. Casualty figures show at least six Thai soldiers have died from rocket fire. The situation remains tense, with both sides sustaining minor violence and ongoing military operations.
Trump’s Broader Claims on Peace Efforts
Trump has claimed to have resolved eight conflicts since taking office, including the situation between Thailand and Cambodia. He expressed confidence in having managed the renewed violence effectively, while similar claimed ceasefire negotiations in other regions remain fragile.
