International Cricketers Urge Pakistani Government to Aid Imran Khan’s Health
A coalition of renowned former international cricketers has urged the Pakistani government to ensure “immediate and adequate medical attention” for Imran Khan, the country’s ex-cricket captain and prime minister, who is reportedly not receiving proper medical care while in prison.
The group, which includes 14 former captains, expressed their concerns about Khan’s worsening health and suspected mistreatment during his incarceration in a letter released through Australian media on Tuesday.
Concerns Over Health and Treatment
“We write with deep concern regarding the reported treatment and conditions of incarceration of Imran Khan, the distinguished former captain of Pakistan and a legendary figure in world cricket,” stated the letter.
Among the signatories are notable players such as Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev, Clive Lloyd, and Allan Border, all of whom faced Khan during his playing career.
Suffering From Health Issues
Khan, who played for Pakistan from 1971 to 1992, leading the team to its first World Cup victory in 1992, is widely regarded as one of the greatest all-rounders in cricket history.
The petition, drafted by Greg Chappell and delivered to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, highlights troubling reports about Khan’s health, particularly the significant decline in his vision during his time in custody, where he has faced numerous charges since August 2023.
Demands for Dignity and Human Rights
The letter calls for Khan to be granted:
- Immediate, adequate, and ongoing medical care from specialists of his choice.
- Humane conditions of detention that meet international standards, including access to family visits.
- Fair and transparent legal processes without unnecessary delays.
Political Context and Continued Support
Khan, who became prime minister in 2018, was ousted from power in a no-confidence vote. He has claimed that this move was orchestrated by the military in collaboration with political rivals and the U.S., accusations that the military and Washington have denied.
Calls to Uphold Justice
The cricketers emphasized the need for Khan to be treated with the “dignity and basic human consideration befitting a former national leader.” They implored the government to recognize the values of decency and justice in these proceedings, appealing to Sharif’s administration in a spirit of sportsmanship and humanity.
