Russell Wilson Takes on Leadership Role with Giants
In East Rutherford, N.J., Russell Wilson may not officially be tasked with mentoring rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart, but his influence is clearly felt. Wilson, a Super Bowl champion signed as the Giants’ starting quarterback, has been actively engaging with the team’s first-string offense throughout the spring.
The Giants selected Dart 25th overall by trading back into the first round of this year’s draft, aiming for him to learn behind Wilson and fellow quarterback Jameis Winston during his rookie year, along with Tommy DeVito.
Wilson, who signed a one-year free-agent contract in late March, has quickly established himself as a respected leader. He shared, “It’s about being the best version of yourself while helping others,” emphasizing the importance of teamwork across all positions.
The veteran quarterback has taken the initiative to organize team dinners and throwing sessions in various cities, creating a sense of unity among teammates. According to wide receiver Wan’Dale Robinson, Wilson’s leadership brings a new level of command that was missing in previous seasons.
Despite Dart’s arrival, Wilson feels unaffected and maintains his focus on leading effectively. He stated, “I just focus on being my best every day,” reinforcing that his priority remains unaltered by new competition.
Coach Brian Daboll emphasized that the Giants expect Wilson to be himself rather than an overt mentor. He noted the natural competitive environment encourages established players to share insights organically, allowing both Wilson and Dart to develop within the new offensive scheme.
