The offseason has officially commenced.
The Los Angeles Dodgers have joined the ranks of the select few, becoming the first team since the 1998-2000 Yankees to win consecutive World Series titles. Following their exit in the American League Division Series at the hands of the Toronto Blue Jays, the Yankees have significant work ahead this winter to enhance their roster.
To address their needs, the Yankees are looking to fill two outfield positions, bolster their bullpen, find options at both third and first base, and secure at least one additional starting pitcher.
Nov. 2: Day After the World Series
On this day, players such as Paul Blackburn, Paul Goldschmidt, Trent Grisham, and others officially became free agents. The Yankees have a five-day window to negotiate with these players, although significant deals during this period are uncommon. Additionally, trades are permissible now that the World Series has concluded.
Nov. 6: Important Deadline
This marks a crucial deadline for the Yankees, involving player option decisions, reinstating players from the injured list, and tendering qualifying offers by 5 p.m. ET. Cody Bellinger is expected to opt out of his $25 million player option, while the Yankees are likely to retain Tim Hill. Jonathan LoƔisiga, however, is expected to hit free agency following another injury-riddled season.
Nov. 10-13: General Managers Meetings
The GM meetings serve as a platform for teams to exchange information regarding offseason objectives. This year, the meetings will take place in Las Vegas, with Brian Cashman scheduled to address reporters on Nov. 12.
Nov. 13: MVP Announcement
Aaron Judge is in contention to secure his third MVP award, competing primarily against Seattle’s Cal Raleigh. Judge leads in critical metrics such as OPS and wRC+. If he prevails, he will join the ranks of Yankees legends like Mickey Mantle and Joe DiMaggio.
Nov. 18 & 21: Roster Decisions and Tender Deadline
By 6 p.m. ET on Nov. 18, teams must finalize their 40-man rosters to protect eligible players from the Rule 5 draft. Notably, prospects like Spencer Jones and Elmer Rodriguez-Cruz must be added. By Nov. 21, the Yankees will decide on 14 arbitration-eligible players, weighing whether to tender contracts or non-tender players which would place them on the unrestricted free agent market.
Dec. 8-11: Winter Meetings
Diverse signings and trades are anticipated at the Winter Meetings, taking place this year in Orlando. This event often serves as the backdrop for the most significant offseason moves, including potential acquisitions of top free agents like Kyle Tucker and Cody Bellinger.
