INDIA TOUR OF ENGLAND, 2025
Day 3 Statistical Highlights
Here are the key statistics from Day 3 of the ongoing second Test at Edgbaston between England and India:
An Exceptional Innings
407 – England’s total of 407 is the lowest all-out score to feature two players scoring over 150 runs (184* by Jamie Smith and 158 by Harry Brook). The previous record was set by the West Indies, who scored 414 against Australia in Georgetown in 1968 with individual contributions of 152 by Sir Garfield Sobers and 150 by Rohan Kanhai. Interestingly, India’s first innings total of 471 at Headingley was the lowest to include three individual centuries.
Record Number of Ducks
England recorded 6 ducks, marking the most in a Test innings, surpassing their previous incidences of five against the West Indies, Australia, and New Zealand. This total represents the joint-highest number of ducks in a Test innings, with England experiencing it for the ninth time, the last occurring in Cape Town during the shortest completed Test last year.
Milestones in Duck Records
Brydon Carse became the player to earn the 10,000th duck in Test cricket history, trapped leg-before by Mohammed Siraj. Siraj soon added more ducks to the tally, dismissing Josh Tongue and Shoaib Bashir in quick succession, making it 10,002.
Impressive Performances amidst Chaos
184* by Jamie Smith is now the highest score achieved by an England wicketkeeper in Test matches, surpassing Alec Stewart’s record of 173. It is also the second-highest for a keeper against India, preceded only by Andy Flower’s 232* in 2000. Smith’s score is now the highest by an England batsman from No. 7 or lower, breaking a 128-year-old record.
Notable Partnerships
The partnership of 303 runs between Brook and Smith is England’s third-highest for the sixth wicket or lower in Test history, following other notable partnerships. This match also marked the occurrence of two separate 200-plus partnerships for the sixth wicket or lower, a rare achievement in any Test match.
