Jamie Smith’s outstanding 184* and Harry Brook’s 158, forming a formidable 303-run partnership, helped England dodge the follow-on in the second Test at Edgbaston. Despite several ducks, a six-wicket haul from Mohammad Siraj allowed India to establish a substantial 180-run lead. The visitors added an additional 64 runs for the loss of one wicket before Day 3 concluded in gloomy Birmingham.
The day got off to a rocky start for England, who fell under heavy pressure early on as Siraj took two important wickets in consecutive balls. Joe Root edged a leg-side delivery to Rishabh Pant, followed by Ben Stokes, who misjudged a rising short ball that ended up in the keeper’s hands.
With the score at 84/5, England appeared to be in deep trouble. However, the arrival of Smith sparked a sense of urgency, aided by a lenient Indian slip cordon that provided easy runs. Smith quickly got off the mark with a boundary, leading to a remarkable counterattack that unfolded over two sessions.
Brook quickly found his rhythm, hitting frequent boundaries off the Indian bowlers. He reached his half-century in just 72 balls, showcasing a beautiful cover drive for three. Smith kept pace, attacking Prasidh Krishna and racing to 49 off 38 balls with a flurry of boundaries. Despite India’s spin attack, Smith excelled, scoring an 80-ball century, joining Brook in achieving impressive milestones.
The duo set records in their partnership, successfully avoiding the follow-on in a wicket-less afternoon that further frustrated India. After lunch, Brook reached his ninth Test century shortly after, and Smith was buoyed by a dropped catch at 121. Together, they crossed the 200-run partnership, a first for an English pair at sixth-wicket or lower against India.
As the innings progressed, the Indian bowlers eventually found a breakthrough. Once the partnership surpassed 300 runs, Akash Deep took the vital wicket of Brook, and shortly after, the collapse began. Siraj then wrapped up the tail, completing his impressive six-wicket haul. England finished with six ducks, their reliance on Smith and Brook evident as they established a daunting first-innings total.
As Day 3 wrapped up, India held a commanding lead of 244 runs, with nine wickets still in hand, but rain in the forecast posed a potential hindrance for the remainder of the match.
Brief scores: India 587 & 64/1 (KL Rahul 28*, Yashasvi Jaiswal 28; Josh Tongue 1-12) lead England 407 (Jamie Smith 184*, Harry Brook 158; Mohd. Siraj 6-70, Akash Deep 4-88) by 244 runs
