Mikel Arteta has called for Arsenal to join a competitive transfer pursuit for Chelsea forward Christopher Nkunku, who is looking to leave the club.
After his £52m transfer from RB Leipzig in 2023, expectations were high for Nkunku, but he has so far failed to impress at Stamford Bridge.
During his debut season, the 27-year-old made only 14 Premier League appearances due to persistent injuries. Although he has returned to fitness this season, he has scored only three league goals, falling short of the expectations of Chelsea fans.
Given his struggles, Chelsea contemplated selling him in January and are reportedly open to offers as the summer transfer window approaches.
Despite current form, Nkunku’s past accomplishments, including being the Bundesliga Player of the Season in 2021-22, have attracted interest from several clubs. He is eager for a summer move to rejuvenate his career, with six clubs reportedly interested.
Arsenal is reportedly ‘preparing a move’ for Nkunku, believing he could excel in their system. However, they will face stiff competition from several other clubs, including Manchester United, who reportedly plan to rekindle their interest.
Arsenal Considered a Positive Move for Nkunku
Experts suggest that Arsenal or Bayern Munich would be suitable destinations for Nkunku, enabling him to improve further. Former Chelsea player Florent Malouda advised that while Nkunku should consider staying at Chelsea, a change might be beneficial for him in the long run.
Expert Opinions on Nkunku’s Future
Former Chelsea defender Frank Leboeuf echoed the sentiment that both parties might need to part ways. He believes Nkunku’s potential hasn’t been realized yet and that a fresh start could reignite his career.
